Have you been giving your running shoes loathsome looks? Does it seem too early to break out your golf clubs? You’re not alone. For many skiers, this winter got cut short, thanks to toasty temperatures and low snowfall.
But just because it’s May doesn’t mean you need to quit. A small number of resorts across the continent haven’t given up yet. This is where you can ski this Memorial Day.
One caveat, though. Late season operations can change fast so, if you’re planning a trip, always check the ski area’s website or social media page first.

Boyne Mountain, Michigan
May 23. Put it on the calendar if you want to help Boyne Mountain make history. Thanks to a huge “glacier” built on its Victor trail, the resort’s already offered skiing several weekends this month. Now, Boyne Mountain is gearing up to have its latest ski day ever. To celebrate the occasion, coffee and donuts will be on tap. Those who sign up for a silent auction could score some free Shaggy’s Skis, too.
Montana Department of Commerce
Beartooth Basin, Wyoming
Beartooth, the famed summer ski area on the Wyoming-Montana border, is a bit of a toss-up for Memorial Day. At the time of writing this, they’re shooting for May 25, give or take a few days. Either way, the ski area’s set to open in the near future, with plans to keep its Poma lifts spinning into June.
Now, for the uninitiated, Beartooth isn’t your usual ski area. There’s no big base lodge or high-speed six-person lifts. There’s a basin, there’s snow, there are a few cliffs to jump off, and there’s skiing. It’s a no-frills experience from top to bottom. That’s part of the rustic Beartooth charm, though. And when you’re talking about skiing in late May, none of the extracurriculars are all that important—some slush and sun go far enough.

Mammoth Mountain, California
Mammoth Mountain doesn’t play around when it comes to its “Second Season.” In one recent year, the resort lasted all the way until August, boosted by record snowfall. While a season that long isn’t in the cards now, Mammoth still plans to stay open until May 31, at least, making it a solid pick for the long weekend. Plus, thanks to the altitude, spring skiing doesn’t really feel like spring skiing at Mammoth. Rather, it’s just skiing under the sun. The coverage’s often great and, on occasion, May storms throw some wintry conditions into the mix.

Palisades Tahoe, California
Another of the few big dogs still kicking, Palisades, almost closed in April. But then, it started snowing again, and the resort changed course, once again aiming for Memorial Day weekend. The final day of ski ops is May 24, conditions permitting. To send off the season, Palisades is hosting the weekend-long Made in Tahoe festival, with brews, live music, and loads of local vendors. Even if this past winter wasn’t always cooperative out West, there’s no reason you can’t send it off on the right foot.

Timberline Lodge, Oregon
Long known as North America’s summer skiing capital, Timberline Lodge, as usual, will be open for Memorial Day, serving up its trademark mix of Oregonian vistas and blue skies. To those who haven’t visited: something’s in the air below the peak of Mt. Hood. We aren’t sure what it is, exactly, but the energy here is unmatched, hitting the perfect balance between beach day and ski day.
Killington, Vermont
When it comes to defying nature, Killington’s hard to beat. The resort may not have the cold weather or the altitude to make it until May through more organic measures, but it doesn’t need to: plenty of elbow grease can make for all that. To keep the season going, Killington builds a mound of snow on the famed Superstar trail. The resort’s open for skiing Friday through Sunday, with Memorial Day—which is a Monday—as a planned bonus.

Then, of course, there’s the famed fridge. A sprawling indoor ski area just outside Manhattan, New York, Big Snow brings the mountains to the metro. Given its climate-controlled set-up, the ski area can be open when it’s 80 degrees outside, Memorial Day or not. That novelty alone is worth the price of admission.
