In states across the West, the ski season at some mountains is coming to a close a little earlier than expected because of lower-than-normal snowfall and, more recently, a historic and record-breaking heat wave.
Across Colorado, resorts have been working hard to prolong the season. Mother Nature, though, has made that a difficult task.
Buffeted by the heat, local ski areas—particularly smaller and lower elevations ones—have trotted out amended closing dates.
Howelsen Hill pushed its last day of the season to March 22.
“Despite the challenges that came with a lighter snow year, our mountain crews did an incredible job keeping the hill operating and the experience fun for the community,” said Howelsen Hill Ski and rodeo manager Brad Setter in a press release. “Howelsen Hill really shines as a hometown ski area.”
Sunlight Ski Area plans to close the same day, weeks earlier than its originally planned date of April 5.
There are two ways skiers can see the situation.
One, this is a terrible, no good season, and it’s time to break out the mountain bike.
Two, spring’s here early, and there’s never been a better time to take advantage of the sun, slush, and thinner crowds (as you might expect, we prefer this option).
If you fall into the latter camp (which you should), this list should help you plan where you might want to go. These Colorado ski area closing dates for the 2025-26 season were pulled from resort sites and Colorado Ski Country USA.
They may be subject to change, so take a look at the website of your chosen resort before hitting the road.
It’s worth noting, too, that even as the current outlook doesn’t look great, April—or even May—can bring more snow to Colorado’s mountains. The weather feels like spring right now, but that doesn’t mean you should count Old Man Winter out yet.
(We plan to keep this article updated as spring progresses).
