Montana scored big this week, with snow piling up at some of the state’s biggest ski areas.
The storm moved in from southern Canada and interacted with moisture moving east from the Pacific Northwest, and dropped more than a foot of snow in some areas.
Saturday and Sunday should be a bit calmer, with more weather potentially moving in Sunday night into next Monday.
The Montana/Idaho border resorts seemed to fare the best with this particular storm track. Resorts in Idaho, like Pomerelle, Pebble Creek, and Grand Targhee (technically in Wyoming but on the Idaho side of the Tetons), also fared well, with storm totals over a foot.
Let’s take a look at which resorts scored the biggest in this last storm and where to get the best turns in Montana and Idaho this weekend.

Big Sky – 15″
After a bit of a dry spell, Big Sky got a whopping 13-15″ of snow from Thursday into Friday morning. The storm didn’t come in too windy either, meaning Big Sky skiers should have a fantastic Friday of pow skiing. Temperatures are forecasted to stay cold (low 20s at mid-mountain) and an additional 2″ of snow is possible throughout the day. Parts of Big Sky are still reporting a base depth of up to 69″ which should make for some decent coverage under all that fresh snow.
Showdown Montana – 11″
Showdown Mountain Montana racked up an impressive 11″ of snow overnight with more falling through the day. Temperatures will also stay cold through the day at Showdown, which should make for an excellent day of powder skiing. The resort has events like the Brock Stokke Bump Off Bash + Tacky Attire Day this weekend, which is perfect timing after a nice snowpack refresh.
Red Lodge Mountain – 7″
Red Lodge Mountain got 3″ of snow yesterday and 4″ overnight on Thursday for a 24-hour total of 7″. However, another 3″ could fall throughout the day Friday, making for free refills and improving conditions throughout the day at Red Lodge. The storm pattern is expected to quiet down at Red Lodge over the weekend, but next Tuesday, March 10th, is forecasting up to 14″ for the ski area. So, while today might not be their deepest day, it’s the start of a pretty good week and a half at Red Lodge.
Discovery Ski Area – 6″
Discovery Ski Area has gotten 18″ of snow in the last 48 hours, 6″ in the last 24, and another 2″ overnight. Saturday morning could offer some pretty nice turns at Discovery; however, temperatures are expected to warm up a bit throughout the day. A warmer, quieter pattern this weekend will give way to hopefully more snow starting at the end of next week.
