Every great ski resort has a superpower. Some are defined by their terrain, some by their snow, and others by the way they make a day on the mountain feel. As we gear up for our annual Resort Guide rankings—which will drop this October—we’re zeroing in on the one thing that these iconic ski destinations do better than almost anywhere else, from storm skiing at Alta to endless intermediate exploration at Vail.
Here’s what these 11 legendary resorts are really best at in two simple sentences—and why that strength is worth planning a trip around.
Jackson Hole
Best for: Steep terrain that rewards confident skiers
What surprises people: Jackson is steep, but it’s really very skiable thanks to the mountain’s sustained pitches, open bowls, and consistent fall lines that make expert terrain feel more fluid than intimidating. If you’re comfortable on black diamonds, you’ll probably ski more expert terrain here than almost anywhere else.
Vail Mountain
Best for: Endless intermediate cruising and exploration

No resort in North America makes it easier to spend an entire day linking long, confidence-building blues through expansive and varied terrain that rewards exploration over conquest. The legendary Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin serve up a low–effort backcountry vibe.
Killington Resort
Best for: Skiing as much as possible
With some of the best snowmaking in the East, a high elevation, and a famously long season, Killington is built for skiers who just want more days on snow. Add six interconnected peaks and a lively après scene, and there’s plenty to keep you coming back.
Aspen Snowmass
Best for: Incredible variety

Four mountains with distinct personalities gives Aspen Snowmass the edge when it comes to terrain variety. Whether you want cruisers, bumps, glades, terrain parks, steeps, or high-alpine adventure, few destinations let you vary your ski day so completely without changing destinations.
Alta Ski Area
Best for: Storm skiing
On a powder morning, you won’t find a more intuitive blend of terrain, lift access, and snow quality. It’s also skiers only, so folks who don’t like to share their slopes with snowboarders will find their nirvana here.
Stowe Mountain
Best for: Classic New England skiing

Narrow trails, old-school steeps, glades, and a quintessential Vermont village make Stowe the full package for skiers who love the character of East Coast skiing. You can feel the history and authenticity on the slopes, from the Front Four to the historic lodges, Stowe is about soaking up the experience.
Big Sky
Best for: Finding room to roam
Big Sky’s superpower isn’t just its enormous acreage—it’s how uncrowded that acreage can feel and how incredibly easy it is to navigate thanks to one of the fastest lift systems in North America. Wide-open terrain, manageable lift lines, and Lone Peak’s big-mountain skiing give you something increasingly rare at destination resorts: space.
Snowbird
Best for: Big vertical and expert laps

If you like long, sustained descents where your legs are the only limiting factor, Snowbird is hard to beat. Its terrain rewards skiers who want to keep charging from first chair to last, and has the historical snowfall to match that vibe.
Whistler Blackcomb
Best for: Sheer scale
It’s difficult to appreciate just how expansive Whistler Blackcomb is until you’re there. Two massive mountains, glacier skiing, alpine bowls, tree skiing, long cruisers, and a truly vibrant village combine into a destination that feels more like a ski city than a single resort.
Palisades Tahoe
Best for: Big-mountain personality

Even if you never ski the steepest lines, Palisades has an unmistakable energy. Historic terrain, iconic lifts, and a culture shaped by generations of expert skiers give it a character that’s difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Deer Valley
Best for: A frictionless ski vacation
Immaculate grooming, exceptional guest service, efficient operations, and excellent food mean you spend more time enjoying the day and less time dealing with annoying logistics. For many skiers, that’s exactly what makes a vacation memorable.
