Sunday Watch: Mali Noyes Finishes Utah's Hardest Lines In Record Time

[email protected]

By now, you’ve probably heard about how Mali Noyes skied the Chuting Gallery in record time last spring.
Noyes smashed out 93 of the most difficult, technical, and iconic ski lines in Utah’s Wasatch range in a record time of 47 days. Over the last six months, Noyes has released a web series chronicling her efforts, coined Project Rapid Fire, and showing the good, the bad, and the jaw-dropping of her incredible ski mountaineering feat.
Now, just over a year since she finished the project, Noyes has released the final episode of Project Rapid Fire, which documents the last few lines on the list. In the last episode, we follow Mali as she skis Monte Cristo, Directissimo, Hellgate Couloir, King’s Peak, and Memorial Chutes 1 & 4 over the last six days of her feat.
Perhaps one of the most impressive feats of Noyes’ mission was not just the physical, but also the mental strength and fortitude she exhibited in the face of poor snow conditions, long days, and high levels of risk. The final episode offers a vulnerable, real look at some of the tougher moments Noyes experienced toward the end of the project as she pushed through to the finish.

The final episode touches on the impact of accomplishments like Noyes’, not just as a woman, but for the entire sport. “So often in our society, you see that there’s a double standard in the way that women or men are celebrated for their accomplishments,” says Cody Townsend in the episode. “What Mali has done with this Rapid Fire project, it’s elevating what so many people have know for so long, that women are as strong as the men.”
The author of the Chuting Gallery book, Andrew McLean, appears in the episode, saying that when he heard the news that someone had completed the book in just 47 days, he didn’t think that was possible.
Caroline Gleich, who was the first woman to ski the Gallery in its entirety, remarks that doing so is like doing 90 ultramarathons stacked on top of each other.

While the Project Rapid Fire web series has been working its way into the world over this winter, Noyes has been busy ticking off new lines in British Columbia like the Comstock Couloir and continuing to #dropboysinthebooter and blow our minds.
