Washington Ski Area Shows Off New Base Area Lodge for Beginners and Families

As the ski season approaches, Washington’s White Pass Ski Area is showing off a new lodge aimed at beginners and families making their first turns on the slopes.

Called Base Camp, the lodge has been steadily taking shape over the summer, with regular updates showing crews at work and concrete deliveries. Located near Lot C below White Pass’ beginner slopes, chairlifts, and magic carpets, Base Camp came about, in part, to meet the need for more indoor space.

“The Lodge will primarily serve customers who are new to snow sports and will also be open to all customers looking to start their day in that location,” a blurb from White Pass’ website reads.

In a recent social media post, the ski area added that the lodge includes a “fully stocked rental center, top-notch instruction, and purpose-built learning terrain.”

“From first steps to first turns, Base Camp is where Pacific Northwest families begin their mountain adventure,” the post reads.

The project is set to be a significant makeover for White Pass, which dates back to the 1950s and is known as one of Washington’s sleepier, homier ski area haunts with a distinct throwback vibe that spans around 1,400 acres.

Demo gear will remain available in the Ski and Snowboard Sales and Service Center in the Day Lodge. White Pass advised visitors looking for rentals or instruction to park in Lot C next season for easier access to Base Camp. Because of the new lodge, White Pass’ RV parking is also moving back to its original location in Lot A. The ski area noted that it’s working on the RV lot layout and will share that information as soon as it’s ready.

Located south of the state’s busiest destinations, Crystal Mountain and Stevens Pass, White Pass offers stunning views of Mt. Rainier. It also served as a proving ground for the dynastic Mahre clan, including the Olympian brothers Phil and Steve alongside big mountain ripper Andy.

The new lodge at White Pass follows the debut of a rebuilt base area at Crystal Mountain, which got a significant makeover in recent years called the Mountain Commons.
