Work Starts on Utah Ski Lift With 100-Plus Acres of New Terrain

Progress on a new chairlift set to expand the slopes at Sundance Mountain Resort, Utah, is officially underway.
Named for a 1979 western comedy starring Sundance’s celebrity founder Robert Redford, the Electric Horseman is set to climb up the backside of the resort, dropping visitors on top of two new terrain pods starting next winter.
In a recent social media post, Czar Johnson, Sundance’s chief operating officer, gave skiers a glimpse into the start of the summer project. Behind him, parts for the new lift sat in the sun.

Once finished, the high-speed quad lift will finish at Sundance’s summit, near the upper terminal of the pre-existing Red’s Lift.
“Electric Horseman means more skiing, less waiting, shorter lift lines, a six-minute lift ride, 1,850 vertical feet per lap, and the ability to ski the entire back mountain on a single lift,” said Johnson in the update.
The first chunk of new terrain below the Electric Horseman covers 60 acres and nine trails. The next pod, set to debut alongside the new lift during the 2026-27 season, is larger, encompassing 105 acres.

As the resort readies the lift for next season, Sundance plans to share updates and milestones from its construction.
Much of that will appear on social media, presumably, but the resort’s also offering an option for skiers to see the process in person. On May 22, Sundance will open for scenic lift rides to the top of the mountain, “where you can get a front row seat at the construction project,” said Johnson.
The construction of Electric Horseman follows a flurry of modernization at Sundance.
In 2020, Redford sold the resort to Broadreach Capital Partners and Cedar Capital Partners. Since then, three chairlifts have been installed, joining other improvements, like a new hotel. When Electric Horseman opens, more than half of Sundance’s lift fleet won’t date back any further than 2021.
Established in 1969 by Redford, Sundance Mountain Resort is a comparatively small ski resort in the mountain-dense Salt Lake City, Utah, area. It is known for its stellar views of Mount Timpanogos and thinner crowds.
