In Nova Scotia, an off-the-beaten-path ski area is teasing an eagerly anticipated expansion.
Cape Smokey, perched on the edge of the Atlantic coastline, shared additional details on social media about new terrain previously teased earlier this summer.
In the post, the ski resort showed a video with a brief graphic highlighting the expanded slopes, along with the message, “4.5 years = 600+ acres = 400M vert = 3 lifts.”
A thin slice through the trees was the only visible part of the project in the video.
This is year one, “starting to cut out the trails and the lift lines,” a member of the resort said.
“Until this point in time, nothing like this existed in Atlantic Canada,” they continued, adding that with its diamonds and double black diamonds, the expansion “will be serious skiing for serious skiers.”
Another graphic in the video showed three lifts and a collection of new trails adjacent to Cape Smokey’s existing footprint, which currently spans 150 acres, 16 trails, and two lifts.

The tease comes as Cape Smokey—one of North America’s most unique ski areas with waterfront views and a remote location—embarks on a new chapter.
A past press release noted that Cape Smokey has plans to increase its acreage.
“Currently offering over 150 acres of skiable terrain, the resort plans to expand to 642 acres as future phases are completed,” one passage from the release reads, which was published in November 2025.

The ongoing development also reflects an apparent comeback for Cape Smokey.
According to a blurb published by the World Tourism Institute, Cape Smokey’s story began in the 1970s. Over the decades, the property, perched on a famed coastal highway called the Cabot Trail, was run by a mix of volunteers and owners, including the Nova Scotia Government.
Alongside periods of closure, eight different investors had considered buying Cape Smokey before pulling out. The blurb said the resort faced the risk of permanent closure.
But in 2019, Cape Smokey Holding swooped in, led by CEO Martin Kejval, a former ski racer from the Czech Republic.
The new ownership opened a gondola in 2021 with plans to make Cape Smokey a year-round destination. Since then, the resort has also unveiled new waterfront lodging.
