X Games League Unveils Its Next Winter Team in Utah Skiing Hotspot

As the X Games prepares to debut its bold new team-based take on action sports called the X Games League, more details are trickling out about which four cities will have their own winter clubs.
The latest confirmed addition is Park City, Utah, a fitting choice given the town’s ski-centric scene and Olympic history.
On Thursday, X Games announced that the newly created Park City team, or XC Park City, had been bought by private equity investor Allen Thorpe. He also bought the summer X Games League club based in Los Angeles, California.
“The MoonPay X Games League creates an entirely new category of sports ownership,” said Thorpe in the release. “As a native Californian and 20-year Park City resident, I’m especially excited to build championship organizations in both Los Angeles and Park City.”

New York City already has a winter X Games League club, which was bought by a private equity firm in an “eight-figure transaction.” The other two planned clubs for the inaugural winter season haven’t been announced yet.
The Park City news provides a clearer picture of the X Games League, which is poised to reshape the action sports competition landscape.
Freestyle snowboarding and skiing have largely seen individual events over the years. But with the X Games’ new model, the athletes will also be competing for team victory during a three-stop tour. Each winter event will feature the tried-and-true X Games disciplines, including slopestyle, big air, knuckle, and superpipe.
“The investment in two X Games Clubs is a powerful validation of the vision we have for the future of action sports,” said Jeremy Bloom, CEO of X Games, in the release. “We’re creating permanent teams, season-long storylines, stronger opportunities for athletes, and deeper connections with fans. Allen immediately understood that opportunity, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the X Games family.”
To assemble the teams, X Games is borrowing another element from football or basketball: a draft set for September 16. During it, the four clubs will build rosters of ten athletes with five men and five women. The rosters must include skiers and snowboarders.
The summer arm of the X Games League is about to kick off with skateboarding and BMXing on June 26 in Sacramento, California. Four cities have summer clubs: Los Angeles, New York City, Sao Paulo, and Tokyo.
