As bittersweet as it is to watch summer’s long days fade away, we skiers can’t help but get excited for what’s to come. There’s even snow on some ski resort summits already!
So, as Labor Day approaches, it’s time to take stock of your ski gear and see what needs replacing. Retailers are actively working to clear shelves of last year’s gear, which means deep discounts on your favorite ski brands. Jackets, fleeces, helmets, and more are at their lowest prices, so if you’ve been eyeing some new gear, this is the perfect time to shop.
Oakley Mod 5 Helmet

If you don’t like the way helmets look on you, try a Mod 5. The chic color-blocking makes the Mod look sleek and stylish, even on more challenging head shapes. It’s also one of the safest lids on the market, with customizable BOA technology, a magnetized Fidlock buckle, and a cozy Polartec liner. It comes in seven colors, including one that’s 50 percent off.
Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket

The Nano Puff is a known quantity. If you’re clicking the above link, you’re just as likely to be replacing a well-loved piece as buying one for the first time. That’s because the Nano Puff is one of the best ski midlayers on the market, made with recycled Primaloft Gold synthetic insulation that won’t wet out or lose loft if you sweat. This modern classic is currently $70 off in three colorways for men and two for women, so act before they’re all gone.
Kari Traa Johanne Jacket

Ladies looking for a technical ski jacket that’s also cute and fashionable should consider the Johanne Jacket. Made by women’s-only Norwegian brand Kari Traa, this is a fully featured ski jacket with a waterproof-breathable two-layer shell on the outside and Primaloft insulation beneath.
Thoughtful features include a helmet-compatible hood, a removable powder skirt, a two-way front zipper, and adjustable Velcro cuffs to keep the snow out. This is a great option for women who run cold, and it’s nearly half off right now; if you need a whole new kit, the Johanne bib is also on sale ($185)

If you haven’t thought about cold fingers in a few months, let this be a friendly reminder that winter is coming. Curb the single-use handwarmers and invest in a rechargeable four-pack. These handwarmers are small enough to fit inside gloves and can get up to 122°F. The charge is designed to last for 12 hours while on “efficiency mode,” which keeps hands warm all day long at a comfortable 90°F. Charging is easy with a USB-C connection, and the warmers come in a convenient carrying case.
Arc’teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody

Arc’teryx midlayers are well known to be versatile, and the Gamma hoody is no exception. This zip-up jacket is great for chilly fall mornings and offers a waterproof shell. It also has an exterior with a UPF 50+ rating, so it’s the perfect companion for time spent outside. The women’s version has three colors currently on sale, and while the men’s is full price, we found the similarly designed Men’s Gamma Hoody to be up to 40 percent off in select colors.
The North Face Retro Denali Jacket

There’s something utterly nostalgic about wearing a North Face Denali fleece in the fall. This jacket is an all-around win on chilly mornings and nights sitting around the campfire. The fleece is bouncy and soft, and plenty of zippered pockets make it perfect for hitting the trails. An adjustable cinch waistband allows you to find the perfect fit, and then save it as a hand-me-down for years to come.

Thinking of getting into the backcountry this winter? If so, or if you need a longer probe, then check out this lightweight option from Black Diamond. Currently 25 percent off, this probe weighs just 12.5 ounces and, when fully extended, reaches over 94 inches. The aluminum tip helps to break up even the thickest of snow; hopefully, the only time you’ll ever need this probe is while practicing avalanche safety drills.
