If ski boots are difficult to recommend because it all depends on fit, then backcountry ski boots are even more problematic. Touring boots don’t just need to fit and perform well when fully buckled for downhill turns—they also need to fit comfortably and move naturally on the way up. Few boots pull off both. The Scarpa Maestrale RS is one that does. For more than a decade, our testers have called the Scarpa Maestrale one of the most trusted boots in the backcountry—and this season, Scarpa rebuilt the Meastrale RS from the ground up. New last, new cuff construction, a fourth buckle, and a shape borrowed from its cabrio-style siblings: this isn’t a tweak, it’s a reboot of a boot that’s been a mainstay in our closets for years.
With a middle-of-the-road 101 millimeter last, 130 flex, four traditional buckles, and Vibram sole with tech inserts compatible with AT and tech bindings, the Maestrale RS is built for skiers who take the “back” in backcountry seriously. The Maestrale usually sits at the higher end of the backcountry boot price spectrum, and the current 25-percent price drop doesn’t exactly turn it into a steal. But for a brand-new model of a boot this proven, it’s nothing to scoff at, either.
